About Reverse Running

From James Bamber, the founder of Reverse Running on how it all started:

''Poor biomechanics and years of heel striking for too many miles on hard surfaces in adequate footwear has taken its toll and plagued me with niggles. I have suffered from repeated bouts of shin splints, ankle injuries and ITBS, with the only advice to give up. I have run through three pairs of orthotics, seen literally dozens of sports therapists of various disciplines and even resorted to surgery (twice!). Even I was wondering whether to give up until I came across the benefits of backward running. Just running a few laps around the track left me in awe of its power whilst the smooth running style suited my biomechanics. With a steady and sensible progression, I now feel physically stronger, more balanced and gain a real sense of achievement and without the niggles of old.  It's only a matter of time before I undo all the ill effects of too much bad running and begin to see my race times drop.  The best thing I can still run forwards in races and not suffer from the niggles of old''

Aims of Reverse Running

1. To create a series of popular

    backward runs around the UK

-  We started off in 2010 in Manchester

   with the inaugural UK Championships.

 - In 2011 we  extending the concept to

   London alongside the 2nd UK

   Championships in Manchester.

 - In 2012 we are introducing a new race

in Liverpool and looking for a new

   Southern location.

2. Promote backward running as an

    alternative exercise

In collaboration with Backward running organisations around the world we will promote backward running as an alternative exercise and even kick start a new fitness craze.

3. Promote backward running as the perfect first step for attracting children into sport and as a novel alternative in the fight against obesity in adults.

4. To raise the profile of the UK backward running abroad.

 5. Make Sport and exercise, FUN!!

Encourage people to have fun taking up backward running so sport is not a chore.

6. Petition backward running as an Olympic sport for 2020 or if that fails at least as a demonstration sport.
